The retail price starts with a reference, then adds a product

A dealer's selling price for a coin or bar can be above a quoted spot reference because the product has fabrication, distribution, inventory, and dealer costs. The premium varies by item, size, supply, and seller. The amount a dealer offers to buy it back is a separate quote, so the purchase premium alone does not show the cost of exiting.

Compare like products at the same time and ask how the quoted total is calculated. A low premium can be offset by a wider resale spread, shipping, payment charges, or a buyback condition that is not visible in an advertisement. Taxes and consumer protections also depend on location and transaction type.

Authenticity depends on evidence, not a single home test

Check the stated weight, fineness, mint or refiner, dimensions, and any supplied assay or serial documentation against information from the responsible producer. Packaging and certificates can support provenance but are not conclusive on their own. A visual, magnet, or sound check cannot establish every item's composition or detect every form of alteration.

If an item cannot be verified through a trusted chain of custody, ask a qualified bullion professional or testing service what methods are appropriate for that product. Avoid damaging tests unless a specialist explains the consequences. The value of an independent check depends on the tester's competence, equipment, and written process.

Storage changes control, cost, and recovery

Home storage keeps the item close but makes physical security, access planning, and loss documentation the owner's responsibility. A bank box or commercial vault introduces provider terms, access schedules, fees, and potentially different insurance arrangements. Coverage should never be assumed: review limits, exclusions, transit protection, and how a claim would be documented.

  • Keep invoices, product descriptions, serial numbers, and transfer records in a secure place.
  • Ask whether custody is allocated to identified items or recorded as a general metal balance.
  • Get the dealer's buyback price and any testing or condition deductions in writing.

Plan the resale before completing the purchase

A coin that is easy to recognize may still face a dealer spread, verification step, or shipping delay when sold. Bars, coins, and unusual products can have different buyer pools. The most useful cost estimate includes acquisition, custody, insurance, transport, and a realistic sale bid rather than a spot-price assumption.

This article is educational information, not individualized investment, tax, legal, or accounting advice. Physical ownership gives control of an item, not a guarantee of authenticity, insurance, immediate resale, or a price close to spot.
